Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

  1. Planning and Design

    • Site Survey: Conduct a thorough survey of the site to understand soil conditions, underground utilities, and other environmental factors.

    • Design the Bore Path: Plan the route that the borehole will follow, taking into account any obstacles and ensuring it meets the project specifications.

  2. Drilling the Pilot Hole

    • Drill Rig Setup: Position the drilling rig at the entry point.

    • Pilot Hole Drilling: A drill bit attached to a flexible drill string is used to create a small diameter pilot hole along the planned bore path. The drill bit is guided and monitored using various tracking and navigation systems.

  3. Reaming (Hole Enlargement)

    • Reaming Passes: Once the pilot hole is complete, it is enlarged to the required diameter by pulling reamers of increasing sizes through the hole.

    • Drilling Fluids: A mixture of water and bentonite (drilling mud) is used to stabilize the hole, remove cuttings, and cool the drill bit.

  4. Pipe Installation

    • Pre-assembled Pipe: The pipeline or conduit is pre-assembled on the surface.

    • Pullback Operation: The reamed hole is checked and cleaned, and then the pipe is pulled back through the hole from the exit point to the entry point using the drill string.

  5. Completion

    • Testing and Inspection: Once the pipe is installed, it is tested for integrity and leaks.

    • Site Restoration: The entry and exit points are restored to their original condition.

Project implementation steps
Advantages of HDD
  • Minimized Surface Disruption: Ideal for urban areas and environmentally sensitive zones.

  • Versatility: Can be used in a variety of soil conditions and for different types of pipelines and cables.

  • Efficiency: Often faster and more cost-effective than traditional open-cut methods.

Applications of HDD
  • Utility Installations: Water, gas, and sewer pipelines.

  • Telecommunications: Fiber optic and electrical cables.

  • Environmental Protection: Avoids disturbing ecosystems by drilling under rivers, wetlands, and other sensitive areas.

Considerations for HDD
  • Geotechnical Conditions: Proper assessment of soil and rock conditions is crucial.

  • Navigation and Tracking: Accurate guidance systems are needed to ensure the bore path is followed precisely.

  • Environmental Impact: Proper management of drilling fluids and waste materials is necessary to avoid contamination.

Aramco Project

Turaif City, Kent Company, completed the project of 960 meters within two months.

The installation included 2 steel pipes of 16" diameter and 480 meters in length, along with 2 steel pipes of 8" diameter and 480 meters in length.
